Al-Hikma Maha Vidyalaya was founded in 1942 as Andiyakadawatte Muslim Vidyalaya in Andiyakadawatte. Then in 1948 it was shifted to its current location in Gampolawatte and later on in 2006 It was renamed as Al-Hikma Maha Vidyalaya.
The school which has been in existence for over 75 years is well established and it is a well known School in Gampola. Spread over three acres block of land in Gampolawatte area and it has been endowed with a very few number of buildings to house it's infrastructure, a small playground, library and a teachers quarters .Practically all the buildings are fairly equipped with furniture and fittings.
The idea of school mainly for Muslims was conceived by prominent individuals at the time, such as M.Alaudeen, A.M.Aidroos,A.M.Kasim, N.A.Abusali, I.M.Kasim, D.M.Hameed lebbe. When circumstances were positively hostile to local education, the institute was named as "Madrasathul hanafiya". Later on O.L.M.Haneefa was appointed as the manager on behalf the management of the school.
